Define Phase: What are we trying to accomplish?

In the spirit of the PDSA cycle, the first step in our improvement methodology is to develop some clarity about what we are trying to accomplish (and why).

At the end of the Define phase we should have:

  • a pretty good idea of the value to the business of the improvement project;
  • a project management approach in place with appropriate accountabilities;
  • a reasonable view of the process that we are going to work on;
  • a realistic plan to resource the project.
